Natural-looking tooth replacements

An effective and attractive solution

As their name suggests, dental bridges literally “bridge” a gap between teeth. The bridge itself is a fixed, non-removable appliance consisting of one or several artificial teeth (known as pontics), which fills the space vacated by missing teeth.

The natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap support the bridge; these are known as “abutments”. The placement of crowns over the abutment teeth allows the bridge to be anchored securely.

Dental bridge FAQs

Dental bridges are prosthetic devices that replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth “pontics” to adjacent natural teeth or implants.

This enables the dental bridge to restore a patient’s chewing and speaking function, while enhancing aesthetics and preventing nearby teeth from moving.

Here at Northwood Hills Dental Clinic, we are pleased to offer traditional dental bridges made from porcelain or ceramic, as well as bonded adhesive dental bridges.

Bonded adhesive bridges consist of an artificial tooth with metal or porcelain “wings” bonded to the inner surfaces of the adjacent teeth. They are typically less expensive than alternative options.

Depending on the material used and the patient’s oral hygiene, a dental bridge typically lasts between five and 15 years.

For bonded adhesive bridges, the risk of debonding may slightly shorten the potential lifespan, to around 10 years.

A dental bridge procedure is generally not painful, as a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area during the treatment itself.

However, after the procedure, some mild soreness or sensitivity may occur. This usually subsides within a few days.

Most people with healthy adjacent teeth or implants are potentially suitable candidates for a dental bridge.

However, if a patient has gum disease, weak remaining teeth, or poor oral health, this may need to be treated first, before any decision to proceed with a dental bridge.
