Here at Northwood Hills Dental Clinic, we take time to asses and understand what’s best for you and your oral health. This helps ensure that you receive the right care, treatment and result.
We provide dental crowns made from highly aesthetic porcelain or ceramic material, that closely resembles natural tooth enamel.
Bonded crowns are another great option; also known as porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, they combine a strong metal core with a porcelain exterior layer.
We also offer temporary crowns made from a material suitable for shorter periods of time. These are used as a placeholder after the initial tooth preparation, while the permanent crown is being made.
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth.
Tooth crowns are used for a range of reasons. For example, they may be fitted to help protect weak teeth, repair broken or worn teeth, cover dental implants, support teeth with large fillings, or improve how the teeth look.
The typical lifespan of a dental crown is approximately five to 15 years.
However, the exact longevity of tooth crowns depends on such factors as the specific material used, the patient’s oral hygiene, and whether they have a habit of grinding their teeth.
A dental crown procedure is generally not painful, as local anaesthesia is used to numb the area before treatment begins.
However, patients may experience some mild sensitivity or discomfort for a few days or weeks after the procedure. If you feel severe or persistent pain during the recovery period, you should contact our restorative dentist for advice.
This process typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist reshapes the tooth and takes an impression, before fitting a temporary crown.
When the patient returns to the clinic for their second appointment, the temporary crown is removed. The permanent crown is then fitted and securely cemented onto the prepared tooth.
Modern tooth crowns – particularly those that are entirely ceramic or porcelain – can closely resemble natural teeth’s colour and shape.
Skilled dentists, along with the specialist laboratories that create the restorations, can achieve a seamless match between the crown and adjacent natural teeth.
