Inlays and onlays are sometimes referred to as “indirect fillings”, because they are custom-made in a dental laboratory, prior to being fitted to the tooth at the practice. This distinguishes them from traditional fillings, which are placed and hardened directly.
An inlay is a tooth restoration that sits within the cusps (raised points) of a tooth. It is used to fill a cavity on the tooth’s top chewing surface.
By comparison, onlays extend over the cusps, covering a greater surface area. Restoring a greater area than inlays, onlays are sometimes called “partial crowns”.
