Same-day dental emergency appointments

Emergency dental care is designed to treat urgent dental problems that cannot wait for a routine appointment. Such urgent dental care provides immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, stops bleeding, and prevents serious conditions from worsening.

This is distinct from life-threatening emergencies, which should be handled by an accident and emergency (A&E) department. The goal of an emergency dental appointment is typically to manage the immediate issue, with further treatment often required later.

Dental Emergency FAQs

A&E departments are not equipped to handle most dental issues. However, you should go to A&E if you have severe facial swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, or heavy and uncontrollable bleeding.

If you’ve knocked out a tooth, pick it up by the crown (the white part), and rinse it with milk or salt water. Then, try to place the tooth back in the socket and bite down on a tissue to hold it in place. Contact your dentist immediately for an emergency appointment.

Please leave a voicemail with our practice, and we will get back to you within 24 hours. In the meantime, NHS 111 can provide advice on pain management options such as over-the-counter painkillers, in addition to directing you to the nearest alternative emergency dental services.

NHS emergency dental care is not free for most adults. The specific cost of urgent dental care will depend on the treatment needed. Our emergency dentist will explain any costs to you before starting treatment.
