Fissure sealants are thin, protective plastic or resin coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth, particularly molars and premolars.

Deep grooves (fissures) in the back teeth can trap food and bacteria, making them prone to cavities. Fissure sealants are painted onto the tooth surface to seal these grooves and create a smoother, easier-to-clean surface.

This preventive treatment is often recommended for children and teenagers as their permanent back teeth come through. However, adults with deep fissures or a high risk of cavities may also benefit from the procedure.
