A single implant is used to replace one missing tooth. Alternatively, if several teeth are missing, multiple individual implants may be placed.
An implant-supported bridge replaces multiple missing teeth without the need for an implant for each tooth. It involves the bridge being anchored securely to two or more dental implants.
If the jawbone lacks sufficient volume or density to support an implant, a bone graft may be performed to add bone material. After healing, implants can eventually be placed.
This surgical procedure can be performed for upper jaw implants if bone height is insufficient due to the proximity of the sinus cavity.
This treatment typically places two to four implants in the jaw to anchor loose or ill-fitting dentures. It prevents the dentures from slipping or moving.
Yes, dental implants are a safe and well-established treatment. The success rate for implants is high when the procedure is carried out by a qualified dentist – around 97% or more for Straumann implants.
With proper care and regular check-ups, dental implants can last for around 15 to 25 years – or even a lifetime in some cases. However, dental implants are not guaranteed to be permanent, and the crown or restoration may need to be replaced after 10 to 15 years due to wear.
Dental implant surgery is generally performed under local anaesthesia, so it is typically pain-free during the procedure itself. However, some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising may be experienced for several days afterwards. This can be managed with painkillers.
