Save & repair infected natural teeth
A root canal procedure is used to treat infection or damage within the innermost part of a tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, known as the “pulp”. This soft tissue inside the tooth can become infected due to severe decay, a cracked tooth, or a dental abscess.
During treatment, the infected or damaged pulp is removed, and the root canals cleaned and disinfected. They are then filled and the tooth sealed to prevent further infection.
A root canal procedure typically takes place over one or two appointments. The endodontist numbs the area with a local anaesthetic to prevent pain, and then creates an opening through the top part of the tooth to access the internal canals.
They then use specialist instruments to remove the infected pulp. This is followed by cleaning and shaping the root canals, and filling the vacated space with a replacement material.
In a follow-up appointment, a crown may be fitted over the root canal-treated tooth to provide extra
strength and protection.
If you have an internally infected tooth then you are likely to be suffering from persistent tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling or tenderness in the gums, or pain when chewing.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should arrange for an appointment so that we can diagnose and treat the problem.
If you don’t undergo a root canal procedure for an infected tooth, the infection can spread. This may lead to severe pain, swelling, facial abscesses, and potentially tooth loss.
The untreated infection could also affect other teeth, gums, and the jawbone.
With proper care, a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment can last a lifetime. However, a crown may be recommended to help protect it.
The longevity of a root canal-treated tooth will also depend on such factors as the amount of natural tooth remaining, and the patient’s oral hygiene habits.
The primary goal of a root canal procedure is to save as much natural tooth material as possible. In most cases, this is the best solution for preserving long-term oral function and appearance, as opposed to having teeth extracted.
Extraction is rarely a quicker or cheaper option, given that a bridge or implant is likely to be required to replace the tooth as a result.
